Ah, just when we thought it was safe to be dreaming about our new home, we learned this morning that the well in summer produces less than a gallon a minute. If someone were trying to build a house on this property now, it would not qualify for a permit. Now it's likely that a well test today would show a higher production because of the winter rains, but in the summer when we would need a lot of water for our dream gardens, the water would simply not be available. So, we've decided to not buy it. Fini.
So, back to dreaming about something we haven't yet found. In the meantime, here are two photos of a rainbow that showed up in the woods behind our house. After yesterday's crazy snow began to melt and the sun burst through in a dazzling blue sky, the rainbow appeared. It's an interesting phenomenon, this little rainbow in the trees. I've only seen it once before, and it was here in this backyard last month. None of my google searching shows me anything quite like it.

ReplyDeleteHow disappointing. The rainbow pictures are very neat. I got one in the sky this week, actually a double but it was where it was supposed to be. When my husband got one in a wave at the beach,I thought that was pretty cool too. It's just light and moisture but always seems like a wondrous thing when I see one like in even waterfalls.
ReplyDeleteOh, I am so sad for you, R&R. What a long slog this house search is. I take it that extending the well down wouldn't have helped or been economical?
ReplyDeleteThe rainbow is magical, even knowing there's a perfectly rational scientific explanation! Little things like rainbows in trees make such happy memories.
I wish I could say something supportive and helpful, but I'm not clever enough. So I'll just repeat, I'm so sorry this didn't work out. Better to know ahead of time, than to move in and find you can't keep the garden watered.
A tree rainbow? Well, I have yet to see one of those, and given your sad news about water, I'd be leaning towards a whimsical explanation...like worry not, there's a better place just around the corner with your name on it! Fingers crossed for you...

ReplyDeleteIn the mountains my wife grew up in, those who live higher up often lose their water after a few dry years. Their alternatives were visiting neighbors lower down and fear, depleting their resources or driving miles to town to fill jugs and such each day.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend in Colorado who has two wells on his ranch, but they are metered by the state and he is only allowed certain amounts. He's also not allowed to use rain barrels to capture the runoff from his roof or barn; according to the state, that belongs to someone else!
The end of "Centennial" seems prophetic at times!

Well, that well output info would have been certainly useful have a few months ago! As others have said, better to know now than later. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this year's summer garden takes place on your own property.

ReplyDeleteIt just seems like some kind of fix should be possible. A cistern that accumulates water for when you need it in larger quantities, for instance.
The ways of California are strange, but it seems like the owner would have little hope of selling until that little detail gets fixed.
The forest rainbows are indeed neat! Was it a misty day under the trees?

ReplyDeletewe're not willing to take a chance on drilling deeper. storing enuff water for several months is very costly.

I'm glad you found out about the well, now. It's too bad the search is still on. I hope you will find "the" place, soon, and everything goes like clockwork. The rainbow is so very interestingly cool.

It's disappointing, but I admire your equanimity; and anyone who can find a tree rainbow will eventually find the right home.
