Disengaged in December

We feel disengaged from politics. No, that's not exactly right. Politics has disengaged from us. Maybe we are like Congress. We are home with our constituents-- the sunrise, sunset, eagle, hawk, and moon.

December is a time for reflection and introspection. Maybe we are bears ready for our hibernation, or like the squirrel with all of our food buried somewhere just waiting for our hungry muzzles.

We turn on the TV. The talking heads are still talking, but their hearts are not in it. They want to be home with their acorns and sunflower seeds. We are in the thick of the season that almost tips the scales back to earth. Words ring hollow through the leafless trees. There could be a fine peaceful sleep during the long nights, if not for the soldier somewhere rounding a corner in an armorless vehicle, on a road in a country on the other side of the earth.

We rise to another day. We listen to the politics of the moment. Hillary's stupid flag stance. Bedrooms at Watergate Hotel for Republicans and lobbyists. Wesley Clark's assessment that we have made Iraq safe for Iran. Ford's homophobia. The president's stupid mouth. We pull the covers up over our heads and dream of peaceful spring mornings.
