A Funny Thing Happened...

...on the way to a balmy spring after an almost weirdly dry and warm winter. Winter arrived. In a big way over a six day period.

I can't find exact totals, but I'm fairly certain that we had twelve inches of rain from March 12 through March 16. That's a gully-washer of a downpour. Streams and creeks over-flowed their banks, and we were under a flash-flood warning, but it all was resolved by Saturday morning.
We woke to this, amber fog and soft blue skies.

That lasted until some time Saturday afternoon when the clouds rolled back in. By nightfall the snow started. We read the national weather service report and expected a light accumulation of one inch.

This is what we woke to on Sunday morning. By noon it was still falling, and there were six inches on the ground. It's obvious that this crazy storm has stalled on the western slope of the Sierra foothills and is just pouring its snowy little heart out here. Less than an hour's drive down the hill in Sacramento it's sunny and mild.

Ah life in the mountains. Beauty abounds.

  2. Yup, we're in Lake Havasu, and its colder here than in northern Wisconsin, We wanted to head back home tomorrow, but are waiting an extra day to make sure the snow is melted.

  3. crazy! I've been keeping my eyes on the Grass Valley weather - and yes, you did get a lot of rain. Saw video of "Dry Creek" totally on a rampage.

The snow is awfully pretty -- I hear we are to expect another big storm in the next couple of days. Hold on to your sweat socks!

  4. I was wondering how you were doing when I heard it hit the Sierras.
Might be unexpected but it sure is pretty.

  5. Wow! I'm sure that one took you by surprise. We used to have occasional totally unpredicted snows in WI. They were "lake effect" snows from Lake Michigan.

  8. Reminds me of when I lived at Lake Tahoe back in the 70s. One fine, warm, sunny weekend hoardes of people from the Sacto area flooded in to the basin. Then it snowed. Hard. The traffic backed up for miles trying to get out and many spent the night in their cars or in a donut shop we happened to live near. I suppose it was sunny and warm back down in Sacramento then, too.
