I didn't know Roger snapped this pic until I downloaded the photos. I'm hanging crepe paper (thanks to Kathy A) on the windows. I add feathers and all kinds of dimensional things to keep the birds from crashing. It really works, and we don't even mind looking out through the craziness. If I knew good idiograms I could send the world a message....mmmm... what would it be?

Wordless Wednesday: Protecting Birds
I didn't know Roger snapped this pic until I downloaded the photos. I'm hanging crepe paper (thanks to Kathy A) on the windows. I add feathers and all kinds of dimensional things to keep the birds from crashing. It really works, and we don't even mind looking out through the craziness. If I knew good idiograms I could send the world a message....mmmm... what would it be?

ReplyDeleteI too would do what it took to keep birds from braining themselves. My wrap around porch seems to keep them at bay.
ReplyDeleteWe had a "picture window" in our living room back in the 50's that managed to kill several cardinals every day for weeks in the summer. My mom always ran outside when she heard the telltale thud so she could head off the cat, who knew lunch awaited on the ground below the window. I wish she'd thought of crepe paper!!

ReplyDeleteWe were at the World Trade Center on September 9, 2001. They had netting all around to keep the flocks of migrating birds from crashing into the windows. It was a project in collaboration with the Audubon Society. I was so impressed.

ReplyDeletewhen one of my sisters was 13-14, she went on a group trip and they all stayed in a hotel. the girls got silly and were messing around by the pool, apparently making a lot of noise -- so when someone official came around, they ran back to their rooms. my sister ran right through a sliding glass door -- not safety glass and not marked with decals or such; she ended up with over 100 stitches in her knee. so -- it's not just birds.

Roger may want to consider getting a crew cut; my hubby's hair came out in clumps, so he wished he'd cut it all off beforehand. Other than that he did really well with chemo. Best wishes to you both!
I've seen strips of cloth and twirls of foil used. I should think the crepe paper would be a problem if it rains and the stuff bleeds all over. Perhaps not.
ReplyDeleteWe used to soap the windows at the zoo, sometimes getting away with writing witty things on the lion's and tiger's. All the busy birdiness that comes with migration is one more whisper of changing seasons. I am loving that and I missed it both in Chicago where nature was sparse and Florida, where not much changes in the weather. It does my heart good to see and read about you two being out and about enjoying your home and space. Thanks for sharing it.
