A Sunlit Tuesday With Wood Ducks

After three days of heavy rain, the sun came out briefly Tuesday afternoon. The world brightened with leaves that looked like they had been painted with diamonds and grassy hillsides swathed in gold. I grabbed the camera and headed out to look for rainbows. I didn't see any, but that doesn't mean they weren't there.
I did spot this rainbow of a duck in the pond again. What a pair these two beauties are. I try never get too close because I don't want to scare them off. I want them to feel completely safe and welcome. Roger is going to build them a nest box. We hear that Wood Ducks are very fussy. So, he plans to build something they simply can't resist.

Then the sun disappeared after this very well-lit respite.

I went back to unpacking boxes, finding things I had completely forgotten we had. And, OMG one was a jewelry box full of my crazy big old earrings. Style can be a very strange thing, in retrospect.

  3. Your wood duck pair will surely love to nest in a Roger-built box. And, I, for one, would like to see a photo of you in a pair of wild danglly earrings- I can picture that brassy, beaded Indian style right now...

  5. Thank goodness for Freecycle!

Make the nest box look as much like a dead tree as you can. The hole should be pretty high up.

Many years ago, there was a pair nesting by the brook where I walk the dogs several times a day. There is no alternate route, so they were frightened off every day. Nevertheless they nested in a tree right next to the path. Sadly, the tree came down in a storm.

  6. LOVE the photos. I think I'd keep all that old jewelry - you never know when they'll be back in style. Judging from some of the chandeliers I see on actresses these days, you could probably wear them now....lol

  8. So wood ducks like the Rustic Look.
Maybe you can make some kind of spangdangler* from some of the old jewelry!
    Lovely vignette.

*Isn't that what Roger calls those sparkly yard ornaments?

  12. Well, I missed a few beats here, with the family visit that past couple of weeks. But it gladdens the heart to scroll few the past few entries and hear the story of your purchase. May this beautiful place bring you all the happiness you deserve. May we stop by to visit, one of these days?

  17. Wood ducks are my FAVORITE duck...many beautiful ones, of course, but I just love 'em...congrats on their being there to welcome you. I sure do "FEEL" your excitement at having so many hummingbirds at the ready! You're beginning one of the big adventures in life.... a NEW world of love and nature ..I'm envious. We're almost ready to feel the urge to leave the wet gray rainforest.........but MUST wait until Rodger retires.

  18. I'm so glad this place worked out for you two - it seems you are meant to be there, and I'm loving the opportunity to see it through your eyes.

As for those earrings, the less said, the better. Who needs skeletons in the closet when you have the remains of the 60s? :)

  19. Just catching up here and so glad you are finally moving in to your new "HOME". Wow.
What fun slowly turning that house into your house and finding out all its idiosyncrasies.
It is also such fun seeing just what you thought important enough to pack when you left your former home.
Have fun, it has been a long time coming.

  20. Wood ducks are so gawdy, like bleeding hearts. You wonder how brutally efficient nature left these things for us.
