Settling In

We've met two of our neighbors who are deep back-woods people, definitely not lightweight weekend country dilettantes. They are a husband and wife team who rather interestingly live next door to each other, sharing 22 acres of land and a garden to die for. They are transplants from Santa Cruz, been living here for the past 27 years. They are a great resource for newcomers like us, and have been telling us all the wonderful little historical bits of lore that make our little neck of the woods the place that it is. How they came to be neighbors to each other doesn't seem to be out of any particular desire (as far as we can tell) to not live together, but the wife's intense love of gardening and neighborliness made her the heir to their elderly neighbors, who left her their 17 acres of land and little house when they died. So, she moved in. They are ageless, in that post-60s (not the era, the age) hard, but good life way. Earthy. Unpretentious.

Roger and I admired her garden every time we walked past it on the way to the mailbox. Her driveway shoots off the road on a curve, and it's hard not to miss the big GO AWAY sign she has posted there. So, we obeyed, hardly even willing to cast our eyes in the direction of her splendid garden. Then, one day, she came down the hill riding her garden tractor. She looked us over and said, "You're new on the road here, aren't you?"

"Yes, we are. We moved into the old Benton place. We've been admiring your garden."

"Hey you should stop by and I'll show you around, anytime."

"Really? Your sign made us feel like we shouldn't."

"Yeah, I know, that's just for the jerks who can't figure out that this is a driveway and not the road. Come by and I'll give you some day lilies for your garden."

We liked her right away.

A few times over the past two weeks she has walked over to our house with her little Jack Russell Terrier. She comes to take the dog and us for a walk. The dog is a new rescue who growled and groused on our first outing, but now just basically ignores us or actually somewhat likes our company. She has shown us the secret hikes we can take right out our front door. There's a reservoir not ten minutes from the house. From there, there are miles and miles of trails. Bear and coyote scat. Flocks of acorn woodpeckers calling from the pines. Here we caught the last open views of the Sierras before the oaks fully leaf out.

We feel lucky and grateful.

Anyhow, it seems as though you are settling in well and are lucky enough to have good neighbours and wonderul wildlife at your doorstep. You're off to a great start.

  7. What a delightful couple you have found. It is always nice to have a native guide to show you the neat places it would take you a long time to find on your own. She sounds like a winner.
My sister and her husband live in separate houses and get along great. I can see the advantages.

  13. You have found Paradise. It's beautiful, there are a lifetime of roads right out your backdoor, and you have an awesome neighbor. I like that she has a rescue dog, too! :-)

Seriously, if you had written up a list of everything you want in a new home, I bet there's not much missing from what you've found.

Any chance you'd be willing to post photos of the house? I'm not on Facebook, so I don't know what it looks like. I keep picturing the house you didn't really like and would have had to renovate, but I imagine this one has much more to commend it.

  19. I'm so glad for you guys!

Do you have pics on Facebook? I'm slowly starting to use Facebook (as it seems the only way to keep in touch with the teens and 20-somethings in the family). How do I find you guys?

  20. I missed the 'bear scat' on first reading. is your lovely neighbor giving you any hints on how to avoid this big animals? (Run, Bonbon, RUN!)

I can't wait to meet your neighbor -- she sounds like my kinda gal.

  22. Lucky and grateful- well, I guess! Sounds like just right neighbors with good inside info you need to have. And the offer of day lilies! You guys scored!

I haven't many of my neighbors yet. I'm hoping to win them over before FRANK, the insufferable president of his one many homeowners association decides to build on one of his adjacent lots ( he owns 5 so he outvotes us at every turn. But to spite him, I might paint the house carnation pink and get 3 alpaca.)

Continue to love your new space!

  23. Very nice and what a small world, re the neighbor.

When we had our coffeehouse, we met a couple form SC also, who now live in the same town as us.

They are now in SC for the winter but on their way back.

Beautiful country you are in and away from city lights. Can't beat that!

    My best 2 Roger also!

    Cheers!

  24. Funny how happy I am about your new home, land and neighbors (-:

Interesting about the Santa Cruz connection. My newest neighbors are a couple (in their 60s) who used to live in Santa Cruz. I am enjoying showing them the trails I love -- trails that they might not know about otherwise.

I left California in 1974, but it wasn't because I didn't love California. I've been away for 36 years this spring. Always thought I would return but that seems less and less likely because of my tenuous financial situation. On the other hand, with my new/old job as a medical transcriptionist/speech recognition editor, I can work anywhere where I can get a high-speed internet connection. Who knows what the years to come will bring?

  27. It sounds like you have some good neighbors. They probably won't be playing their music loud at 2:00AM... or revving their noisy vehicles while you are trying to sleep. It's great that the lady showed you some great walking areas!
