We watched a meadow-full of ripe cattail seeds rise up and drift lightly on a breezy, sunny afternoon in January. We remarked wistfully how much it reminded us of snow. It was so warm that day, we wondered if winter were already over for us, if we wouldn't see any more snow until next year.
Then we we watched it snowing all day Thursday and realized, wispy cattail seeds don't really look that much like snow after all. We're under a winter storm warning until 10 pm Friday. Already have six inches of soft powder on the ground. Oh yes, it's definitely still winter.
yes indeedy, that's some kinda snow you've got there!! isn't it grand to be tucked up nice and warm inside? Read another book...play cards...plan an intricate meal. Love those days.
ReplyDeleteoh wow -- snow! i'm so california coastal; seeing that is so rare for me. it snowed a bit when i was in oregon a couple of years ago. and it snowed just like that when we were in northern japan last year, those big fat flakes and so many of them. [no good photos; one set was at night, and more when we were on the train.]
ReplyDeleteI prefer the cattail seeds - even though the snow is gorgeous to see!
ReplyDeleteWe've got the opposite here. Sunny and nearly 70 degrees. Perfect for traveling.
ReplyDeleteOur eight year old granddaughter is going in for surgery tomorrow morning. The replacement shunt (for hydrocephalus) they installed in October is not working well. They are going to try a different style.
I drove four hours today so that I can watch her little three year old sister while her parents do the hospital thing. I love being a grandma.
jeanne marie -- happy travels, happy grandparenting, and hope all goes well with the replacement. xoxo
ReplyDeleteLove the ersatz "snow", and the real stuff you've documented; supposedly we may get some up here, but meanwhile, it's just miserably cold. You remember.
ReplyDeletestill waiting on a few flakes here in the darkness of the early morning. not anticipating any accumulation, thankfully. expecting freezing precip during the latter part of the weekend...that is the stuff i hate!

The cattails do look like snow! but it's the leaves on the trees and sunshine that give it away..that and the fact that they float up..unlike the white stuff, which floats down. And it's floated down up here a lot! Still a winter wonderland out my window, and white is definitely absence of colour
ReplyDeleteDon't forget, if you see sinking birds, take a picture.
ReplyDeleteDay 12 is wonderful. They are counting off fast though I am sure not fast enough for you two. Soon.
Somehow I missed yesterday's post. I love how you are celebrating the countdown!
ReplyDeleteThe cattail seeds are like a snow flurry--the kind that doesn't even register on the ground--I call them snowglobe snowfalls. They lift the heart.
Selfishly, I hope all your snow falls on the west coast and gives us easterners a break! Please don't pass it on our way!
My favorite times of any year are when the climate is in transition from one season to another. It reinforces my belief that no matter what we do to screw things up, some things remain constant. And that makes me feel good inside.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like my back yard with all the snow. :)
