Winter Redux

Someone must have turned the pages of the calendar back to March, or maybe even to February. Spring is gone, and we are back into the deep gray of winter. The sky is pouring rain, and it's been like this for a few days.

Still, we're finding ways to appreciate the beauty of the season, such that it is.
The birdfeeder has a broken piece which allows much of the sunflower seeds from one of the cylinders to fall into the grass. This Mourning Dove was resting comfortably beneath the feeder.
We took a walk in Friday's rain. We walked through a meadow to get back to the car. On the way we saw this lovely mallard's head just above the rain-soaked grass. The photo was taken through the steamy front windshield-- defroster blowing like mad.
We noticed this hummingbird hanging out on this hook on and off all day. I tried photographing him from several angles. When I downloaded the photographs, I noticed this one. I always wondered about hummingbird bills. Do they open? How wide? Now we know.

We're still checking in on the eagle cam at Hornby Island. The video feed has been choppy and unreliable. I checked in on the forum Friday and found someone had posted this video. It's really quite stunning. If you're interested in eagle behavior, check this out. It's a 13.2 mb download.
